Three simple interval estimates for the risk ratio in inverse sampling are considered. The first two interval estimates are derived on the basis of Fieller's Theorem and the delta method with the logarithmic transformation, respectively. The third interval estimate is derived on the basis of an F-test statistic proposed by BENNETT (1981) for testing equal probabilities of a disease between two comparison groups when the disease is rare. To evaluate the performance of these three methods, a Monte Carlo simulation is used to compare the actual coverage probability with the nominal confidence level for each method and to estimate the expected length of the corresponding confidence interval in a variety of situations. On the basis of the results found in the simulation, we have concluded that the method with the logarithmic transformation is either equivalent to or better than the other two methods for all situations considered here.  相似文献

Abstract Fully-sighted honeybees and bees with all ocelli occluded were trained to fly through an arena to arrive at a feeding place. After training, the bees were exposed to side-light flashes during their feeding flights. The flight paths were recorded on video and analysed frame by frame at 40 ms intervals with reference to the main parameters, the coordinates of the thorax and the yaw angle of the bee. Course angles, translational course velocities and accelerations were calculated, and the responses to side light flashes evaluated with respect to 'on' and 'off.
Immediately after light on, fully-sighted bees respond slightly positively by yawing and flying toward the side light. Bees in which all ocelli are occluded are greatly disturbed and respond with negative yawing and flight path directions.
The ocelli apparently help to control phototactic alertness in the bee. They determine whether phototactic orienting or pattern-induced orienting behaviour is more important in a particular state of motivation. They help to minimize the level of disturbance in flight course control, obviously by activating a neuronal circuit with comparator attributes. It is assumed that this kind of compensation or suppression of phototactically guided reflexes occurs only for a few 100 ms. Consequently, the biological significance of light flashes shorter than 400 ms is very slight.
Fully-sighted bees decelerate strongly when a side light is switched on. Bees in which the ocelli are occluded behave less cautiously: they generally fly faster and need more reaction time. Thus, the ocelli help the bee to react photokinetically to photic stimuli in a much shorter time than do the compound eyes alone.  相似文献

Summary Neocarus texanus, a primitive mite, bears two pairs of eyes, which are principally similar in ultrastructure. Each eye is covered externally by a cuticular cornea. It is underlain by flat sheath cells which send extensive processes into the retina. The retina is composed of distal and proximal cells. The 20 distal cells of the anterior eye are inversely orientated and form 10 disc-like rhabdoms. They represent typical retinula cells. Each rhabdom encloses the dendritic process of a neuron, the perikaryon of which is located outside the retina (proximal cells). The significance of this cell is not known. The retina is underlain by a crystalline tapetum. In the posterior eye 14 retinula cells form 7 rhabdoms in an arrangement similar to the anterior eye. The eyes of one side of the body are located within a capsule of pigment cells. Together the axons of the distal and proximal cells form the two optic nerves, one on each side of the body. The optic nerves leave the eyes anteriorly and terminate in two optic neuropils located in the brain.From structural evidence it is concluded, that the resolution of the eyes must be rather low.The peculiar proximal cells have not been observed previously in Acari. They probably resemble at best the eccentric cells and arhabdomeric cells of xiphosurans, scorpions, whip-scorpions and opilionids. Also, inverse retinae and tapeta of the present type have not been found in Acari until now, but are present in other Arachnida. Thus the eyes ofNeocarus texanus evidently represent a unique type within the Acari.  相似文献

Summary In the fly, Calliphora erythrocephala, a cluster of three Y-shaped descending neurons (DNOVS 1–3) receives ocellar interneuron and vertical cell (VS4–9) terminals. Synaptic connections to one of them (DNOVS 1) are described. In addition, three types of small lobula plate vertical cell (sVS) and one type of contralateral horizontal neuron (Hc) terminate at DNOVS 1, as do two forms of ascending neurons derived from thoracic ganglia. A contralateral neuron, with terminals in the opposite lobula plate, arises at the DNOVS cluster and is thought to provide heterolateral interaction between the VS4–9 output of one side to the VS4–9 dendrites of the other. DNOVS 2 and 3 extend through pro-, meso-, and metathoracic ganglia, branching ipsilaterally within their tract and into the inner margin of leg motor neuropil of each ganglion. DNOVS 1 terminates as a stubby ending in the dorsal prothoracic ganglion onto the main dendritic trunks of neck muscle motor neurons. Convergence of VS and ocellar interneurons to DNOVS 1 comprises a second pathway from the visual system to the neck motor, the other being carried by motor neurons arising in the brain. Their significance for saccadic head movement and the stabilization of the retinal image is discussed.  相似文献

Lake Baikal's 29 endemic species of cottoid fishes form three groups: shallow-water species in depths to 350 m; eurybathic species from 50 to 1300 m; and abyssal species from 400 to 1600 m. These groups differ in their abilities to withstand high hydrostatic pressure. As in marine deep-water fishes, abyssal cottoids in Baikal have few or no cones in the retina, and some have tubular eyes. Their seismosensory systems predominate, based chiefly on free neuromasts. The proportion of species with canal systems decreases with depth. Diversity of the predominantly gammarid foods also decreases from 45 species in shallow water to five species in deep water, and the lateral line system plays the dominant role in food detection at all depths. Two abyssal cottoids have become secondary pelagic, achieving close to neutral buoyancy through high lipid levels and reduced skeletal mineralization. These forms take advantage of the abundant pelagic planktonic amphipod populations. The adaptations of abyssal forms parallel those seen in deep-water marine fishes.  相似文献

Summary Alanine-rich peptides serve as models for exploring the factors that control helix structure in peptides and proteins. Scalar CH-NH couplings (3JHN) are an extremely useful measure of local helix content; however, the large alanine content in these peptides leads to significant signal overlap in the CH region of 1H 2D NMR spectra. Quantitative determination of all possible 3JHN values is, therefore, very challenging. Szyperski and co-workers [(1992) J. Magn. Reson., 99, 552–560] have recently developed a method for determining 3JHN from NOESY spectra. Because 3JHN may be determined from 2D peaks outside of the CH region, there is a much greater likelihood of identifying resolved resonances and measuring the associated coupling constants. It is demonstrated here that 3JHN can be obtained for every residue in the helical peptide Ac-(AAAAK)3A-NH2. Two types of distributions for the frequencies of occurrence of amino acids in each position of hypervariable regions CDR-1 and CDR-2 were obtained for 2,000 immunoglobulins. The results show that some positions fit an inverse power-law distribution, while others fit an exponential-type distribution. As a result of comparison with structural data in the literature it is proposed that sites in which the frequency distribution fits the inverse power law are critical to maintaining canonical shapes of the recognition regions or are involved in modulating these canonical conformations, while those sites where the distribution fits the exponential law are those which should be exclusively involved in the recognition mechanism. A computer program (BBReader) was developed which performs an inverse search in theBioMagResBank database. Given (cross) peak positions of a protein, the program searchesfor atoms with matching chemical shifts and suggests possible assignments for user-specifiedhomo- and heteronuclear one- to three-dimensional COSY- and NOESY-type experiments.It can handle 1H, 13C and 15N spectra.
